What is Family Medicine?

The specialty of Family Medicine grew out of the old specialty of General Practice. In contrast to general practitioners, who only undergo one year of training in addition to medical school, Family Medicine physicians receive three years of specialty training after medical school. This includes training in all the major fields of medicine including internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, gynecology, ENT, urology, cardiology, orthopedics and geriatrics. In 2005, the decision was made to change from the title “Family Practice” to “Family Medicine” to stress the value of the training Family Medicine doctors obtain by this additional training.

As Family Medicine physicians, we are certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. The Board requires all physicians to undergo recertification testing every seven years. We specialize in comprehensive medical care. This means that we not only treat a broad spectrum of diseases, we are also dedicated to health promotion, preventive medicine and wellness.
